Postdoctoral position in Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning
The Center for Language Technology, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, invites applications for a 2-year postdoctoral position in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning (ML) to be filled by January 1 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. The postdoctoral position is available within the 5-year European Research Council Starting Grant project Parsing Low-Resource Languages and Domains (LOWLANDS) led by Associate Professor Anders Søgaard.

The Center for Language Technology currently employs researchers and engineers of many different nationalities. The center has considerable experience managing international research projects, frequently attracts visiting researchers and has organized several major conferences in the field. The center offers a joint MA program on text and image processing with the Department of Computer Science, the MA in IT & Cognition, which currently takes in 25-30 students a year.

Job content
The LOWLANDS project is about learning how to parse natural language for which no unbiased labeled data exists, considering both low-resource languages and low-resource domains. It is perhaps the most fundamental challenge in NLP right now that the labeled data available for most practical applications is scarce and heavily biased. Parsing here refers to all levels of syntactic analysis, including part-of-speech tagging, dependency parsing, constituent parsing, as well as semantic role labeling and frame semantics.

Qualification requirements
In order to be considered for the position applicants must have research qualifications at least corresponding to what can be achieved as part of a successfully completed PhD within a relevant field.

The applicant should have considerable programming experience, as well as a strong background in ML (preferably unsupervised, semi-supervised or transfer learning) or statistical NLP. Applicants that can document experience in both fields are preferred.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to publish at the top international conferences or in the best journals in the field (including both NLP and ML), and previous publications in these venues will be emphasized when evaluating applications.

For further details about the qualification requirements to postdocs, please refer to Circular no. 9427 of 13 June 2007 concerning the job structure for academic staff http://www.ubst.dk/lovgivning/personalejura-medarbejdere/ny_stillingsstruktur_eng.pdf/view?searchterm=None

For further information about the position, please contact Project Leader Anders Søgaard (soegaard@hum.ku.dk) or Director of the Center for Language Technology Bente Maegaard (bmaegaard@hum.ku.dk).
