One Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is available at the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Psychosis Research – TOP study, Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital, Oslo, Norway. The K.G. Jebsen Centre is integrated with the Norwegian Centre for Mental Disorders Research (NORMENT), which was recently granted Centre of Excellence status from the Research Council of Norway. The NORMENT research center coordinates a large translational multisite study involving all psychiatric hospital departments in Oslo and several groups at the University of Oslo.
The main purpose of NORMENT is to research neurobiological, genetic, psychological and environmental factors contributing to the development of severe mental illness. Through our extensive infrastructure for clinical evaluations, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, and biobank, we have collected a comprehensive database including genetic and brain imaging data from a large number of healthy controls and patients suffering from psychotic disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.
The postdoctoral position is available for two years with possibility of one year prolongation.
Neuroimaging in TOP Psychosis Study
The postdoctoral position in the NORMENT imaging group is primarily dedicated to analysis of structural MRI data sets of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar psychosis spectrum disorder and healthy controls. The overall goal is to investigate brain structural and functional changes in patients with psychosis and study the interaction with clinical course of development, genes, and cardiovascular, metabolic, and environmental factors.
1200 subjects have been assembled so far and clinical collection is ongoing of structural and functional MR and DTI data that can be studied conjointly in the NORMENT imaging group. The group comprises several postdoctoral and doctoral fellows using advanced methods to explore brain structure and function and within-brain connectivity using MRI. The assembled data also comprises longitudinal data sets.
Job Description
The postdoctoral (government position code 1352) student will work at the NORMENT structural imaging group located at Vindern, in collaboration with the NORMENT functional imaging group and the Section for neuroradiology at Oslo University Hospital at Ullevål. The project has extensive collaboration with Karolinska Institutet, the University of California, and European research sites, and visits to these collaborators may be included. The project uses NORMENT’s extensive infrastructure for clinical evaluations, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, biobank and database expertise and facilities. The research area is psychiatric imaging with focus on analysis of structural neuroanatomical MR data (cortical and subcortical structures, cortical folding, DTI) with regard to a developmental perspective and genetic and phenotypic variation. The fellow will be key scientific personnel in the structural MR imaging project. The job involves close interaction with other NORMENT postdoctoral fellows and scientific expertise proficient in functional imaging methods/multimodal imaging. Large MR data sets are available for analysis but, as inclusion will be ongoing for many years to come, we also encourage the fellow’s own initiatives to develop new ideas and apply novel methods. The postdoctoral fellow is also expected to work closely with PhD students within the project, thus offering possibility of large impact and credit from many collaborative sub projects.
Qualifications and Personal Skills
Applicants should have a doctoral degree (PhD) in computer science, neuroimaging, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, psychology, or medicine with a documented interest in biological psychology/psychiatry, neuroscience and quantitative analysis.
We ask that the candidate have an understanding of Linux environment and MR data analysis (e.g. FreeSurfer, FSL), and experience with neuroimaging statistics.
The ideal candidate has a strong CV, with methodological and/ or applied expertise, an outstanding potential and genuine interest to apply and develop data analysis tools and neuroimaging methodology for this project.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English are a prerequisite. Applicants who have handed in their dissertation for evaluation are also encouraged to apply, caveat the dissertation is approved.
