These Scholarships were established in 2011 and are funded by the School of Environment.
The main purpose of the Scholarships is to encourage high-achieving Mãori students to continue their studies by undertaking Masters thesis study in the School of Environment at the University of Auckland.
Selection Criteria
- The basis of selection will be academic merit as assessed by the Scholarships GPA over the last two years of full-time graded study, or equivalent.
- A minimum GPA of 4.00 (equivalent to a B- average) is required for this scholarship.
- The Scholarships are tenable by Mãori students who are citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand.

General Information
How do students apply? Application by form is made to the Scholarships Office.
If the application closing date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, applications will be accepted up to 5pm on the next working day.

Regulations (PDF version) Application form (Word version) Decision makers The Scholarships shall be awarded by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of a selection committee comprising the Director of the School of Environment (or nominee), the Head of Postgraduate Research and one other member of the academic staff of the School of Environment.
How and when do students learn of the decision? Approximately six weeks after the closing date by letter or email.
What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award? NOTE: Regulations are occasionally updated. Candidates must always refer to the regulations for current and comprehensive information relating to conditions of the scholarships.
Additional information
- Applicants must also apply for admission to the Masters programme in the School of Environment by the closing date.
- The Scholarship may be taken up in either the first or second semester in the year of the award.
- The Scholarships shall be offered annually to students who have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for full-time or part-time study towards a Master of Science or Master of Arts thesis in Geography, or a Master of Science thesis in Applied Geology, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Geographic Information Science, Geology or Geophysics in the School of Environment at the University of Auckland. Payments to part-time students will be on a pro-rata basis.
- A School of Environment Mãori Masters Scholarship may not be held in conjunction with a University of Auckland Masters / Honours / PGDiploma Scholarship or a University of Auckland Mãori and Pacific Graduate Scholarship. The Scholarship may however be held concurrently with any other study award or grant where the Regulations for that award or grant permit and where the University of Auckland Council so approves. The total stipend of any further awards shall not exceed $15,000. If the value of the co-tenured scholarships exceeds $20,000 the emolument for School of Environment Mãori Masters Scholarship will be reduced to limit the co-tenured total to $20,000.
