External fellowships are awarded to two scholars who hold tenure-track positions at other institutions. Faculty at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Professor may apply.
Applicants’ proposals must address the theme of "Expertise and Evidence." The theme can encompass many topics, including the various ways that humanists and scientists think about their work; multiple ways of knowing; the development of and challenges to the specialization of knowledge; the role of the university; the rise and fall of particular theories about society and human behavior; the status across and within cultures of such categories as intellect, emotions, and objectivity; and historical or contemporary dimensions of access to cultural authority. Law, medicine, religion, visual arts, literary criticism, psychoanalysis, the digital environment, and such phenomena as “fake news” and amateur music-making all furnish connections to the theme.
Applicants may be in any field of humanistic study, including anthropology, art and art history, classics, English, history, modern languages and cultures, music, philosophy, or religion.
Fellows will participate in the bi-weekly Humanities Center seminar and in the Center’s other workshops, conferences, and programs. They are expected to be in residence in Rochester and to play an active role in the Center’s community of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates. Fellows will present the results of their research at least once during their tenure at the Center. Fellows will receive a stipend up to $60,000 commensurate with experience and need, as well as an allowance of $5,000 for research and travel related to their project.
The fellowship period is September 1, 2018 to May 15, 2019.

- A research proposal of no more than 1000 words
- A C.V.
- A writing sample
- Three confidential letters of recommendation
