Post-doctoral Fellowships in the Humanities at Universities and Research Institutes in the U.S. and Germany

This fellowship program addresses postdocs in the humanities who wish to spend a year researching in Germany or the USA.

Objective

Via its funding initiative "Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities at Universities and Research Institutes in Germany and the USA" the Volkswagen Foundation aims to strengthen transatlantic academic relations, especially in the field of the Humanities. In this funding initiative the Volkswagen Foundation works closely together with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York.

Scope of Funding

Within the context of these postdoctoral fellowships, the two foundations cooperate with several universities and research institutes of excellence in Germany and in the USA. Notwithstanding, in principle applicants are able to nominate their own choice of university or research institute as the cooperating institution hosting their individual research sojourn.

Each academic year, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Volkswagen Foundation fund up to twelve Post-doctoral Fellowships in the Humanities for stays of 9 to 12 months in Germany. The cooperating institutions are the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, the Lichtenberg-Kolleg in Göttingen, the Exzellence Cluster and the Zukunftskolleg der Universität Konstanz, the Dahlem Humanities Center, Freie Universität Berlin, the Berliner Zentrum Moderner Orient, the Deutsche Archäologische Institut (DIA) in Berlin, the Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek in Frankfurt, the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, the Deutsche Literaturarchiv in Marbach, the Leibniz Institute of European History Mainz (IEG) and the Leopoldina Centre for the Study of the History of Science and Science Academies at Halle (Saale).
The Fellowships address postdocs at American universities and research institutes working in the Humanities who wish to spend some time in Germany working on a research project.

In each academic year, the Volkswagen Foundation will fund up to 12  postdoctoral fellowships in the humanities for one-year stays at academic institutions in the U.S.. The cooperating institutions are the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard University, Washington University, the Getty Research Institute, the Transatlantic Academy, the Georgetown University together with the German Historical Institute (as co-host), the Max Kade Institute for Austrian-German-Swiss Studies at USC, and the Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University.
The Fellowships address postdocs at German universities and research institutes who wish to spend some time in the USA working on their research project, or to concentrate on a particular aspect of their postdoctoral dissertation.

Background

With its funding initiative entitled "Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities at Universities and Research Institutes in Germany and the USA", which began in 2011, the Volkswagen Foundation has expanded the "Harvard-Fellowships" which started in 2007 to encompass other institutions of outstanding repute in the USA. In 2012 this Fellowship program was extended by a reciprocal dimension in order to furnish American postdocs with an equivalent opportunity to spend a year working on their research project in Germany. In respect of this funding initiative, the Volkswagen Foundation works in close cooperation with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York, which for its part on the American side is providing three million dollars for an initial period of four years.

Dieses Fellowship-Programm richtet sich an Postdoktorandinnen und Postdoktoranden aus den Geisteswissenschaften, die einen einjährigen Forschungsaufenthalt in Deutschland oder den USA anstreben.

Ziel der Initiative

Mit den "Postdoctoral Fellowships in den Geisteswissenschaften an Universitäten und Forschungsinstituten in Deutschland und den USA" möchte die VolkswagenStiftung die transatlantischen Wissenschaftsbeziehungen speziell im Bereich der Geisteswissenschaften stärken. Die Stiftung kooperiert in dieser Förderinitiative eng mit der Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York.

Förderangebot

Im Rahmen der Postdoctoral Fellowships arbeiten die beiden Stiftungen mit zahlreichen exzellenten Hochschulen und Forschungsinstituten in Deutschland und den USA zusammen. Allerdings ist es grundsätzlich möglich, bei der Bewerbung eine andere anerkannte Universität oder wissenschaftliche Einrichtung als die kooperierenden Institutionen für einen individuell geplanten Forschungsaufenthalt vorzuschlagen.

Hintergrund

Mit den 2011 ins Leben gerufenen "Postdoctoral Fellowships in den Geisteswissenschaften an Universitäten und Forschungsinstituten in den USA" erweiterte die VolkswagenStiftung die seit 2007 bestehenden "Harvard-Fellowships" auf andere Einrichtungen der Spitzenforschung in den USA. Im Jahr 2012 wurde dieses Fellowship-Programm um eine reziproke Dimension erweitert, so dass amerikanische Postdoktorandinnen und Postdoktoranden jetzt ihrerseits die Chance haben, ein Jahr lang in Deutschland ihrer wissenschaftlichen Arbeit nachzugehen.
Die VolkswagenStiftung arbeitet in dieser Förderinitiative eng mit der Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, New York, zusammen, die für die amerikanische Seite insgesamt drei Millionen Dollar für zunächst vier Jahre zur Verfügung stellt.
