| Sujet: Claude Leon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships in South Africa 2015 Mar 2 Déc 2014 - 15:16 | |
| [wp_ad_camp_1] The flagship education project of the Claude Leon Foundation is the Postdoctoral Fellowship programme in the sciences at South African universities which is now in its seventeenth year. It has as its main goal the building of research capacity at all South African universities and research institutes. More specifically, the Trustees are seeking to upgrade research in the faculties of Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences by making awards to both South African and foreign postdoctoral scientists, who should increase the volume and quality of research output, transfer technical skills, and generally enhance the research culture of universities. It is envisaged that Fellows will not be involved in undergraduate teaching, but will contribute to postgraduate research training. It is believed the Foundation currently accounts for between 15 to 20 percent of all Postdoctoral Fellowships in South Africa on an annual basis. The Foundation offered 46 new awards for 2014. The total number of Claude Leon Foundation Fellowships in 2013 was 98 (this included a number of second-year Fellows). The Foundation has supported over 400 Postdoctoral Fellows over this period and spent over R100 million on the project to date. The Universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Witwatersrand and Rhodes are the largest beneficiaries so far. The nationality of Fellowships awarded is very diverse. This is a deliberate intervention by the Claude Leon Foundation to bring international expertise and talent into South African research laboratories to exchange ideas and transfer expertise. Many of these foreigners choose to stay in the South African research system once their Postdoctoral Fellowships expire – which is a major plus for South African science. Postdoctoral Fellows play a pivotal role in the knowledge production system in academic Departments. Fellows do this through presenting their research findings in Departmental seminars, working collaboratively with South African colleagues to undertake key research projects, helping to supervise Honours, Masters and Doctoral students, and finally, doing a limited amount of postgraduate teaching.
