Scholarship Description: The UCT HIV Diversity and Pathogenesis Group – a group of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) – and the Division of Epidemiology & Biostatistics in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine (SPH&FM) at UCT invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral research fellowship in statistical methods to support HIV vaccine research. The successful candidate will focus specifically on statistical methods for identification of HIV strains which remain infectious and transmitted in the presence of existing partially efficacious vaccines (so-called ‘breakthrough infections’), and thus are targets for future vaccine development. The fellowship is part of an international training collaboration funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The postdoctoral researcher will be overseen by an experienced team of statisticians (Dr Lang Wu of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and Dr Peter Gilbert of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, USA), virologists (Dr. Carolyn Williamson, HIV Diversity and Pathogenesis Group), and epidemiologists (Dr Landon Myer, SPH&FM).
