Applications are invited for Newton Fellowships available for mid-career researchers from Brazil, China, Mexico and South Africa to undertake research. The award will support the international researcher in their own country, providing them with funding through a UK partner to establish and develop collaborations with UK with the intention of transferring knowledge and research capabilities to partner countries. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent research experience and hold a contract in an eligible university or research institute (in the partner countries), which must span the duration of the project. Applicants should have no more than 15 years postdoctoral experience. Fellowships must start in March 2015 and be for a continuous period of up to three years. The application deadline is 22 October 2014.
Study Subject(s): Fellowships are awarded for research proposals focused on clinical or patient-oriented research.
Course Level: Fellowships are available for mid-career researchers to undertake research.
Scholarship Provider: The Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal Society and the British Academy (the scheme is generously supported by the UK Government’s Newton Fund).

Eligibility:
-Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent research experience and hold a contract in an eligible university or research institute (in the partner countries), which must span the duration of the project. Applicants should have no more than 15 years postdoctoral experience.
-Collaborations should focus on a single project involving the overseas-based scientist (‘the Applicant’) and UK-based scientist (“the Co-applicant”).
-The awards offered in partnership with the Academy of Medical Sciences, will cover clinical or patient-oriented research.
-Awards are currently only available for researchers in the following countries: Brazil, China, Mexico and South Africa.

Scholarship Description: Newton Advanced Fellowships for International Researchers, 2015 NewtonThe Academy of Medical Sciences is delighted to be working with the Royal Society and British Academy to offer Newton Advanced Fellowships, available through the Government Newton Fund which is part of the UK’s official development assistance. The Newton Fund is a new initiative that aims to develop the long-term sustainable growth and welfare of the partner country through building reserch and innovation capacity. The Academy of Medical Sciences will be awarding Newton Advanced Fellowships for research proposals focused on clinical or patient-oriented research.

Duration of award(s): Fellowships must start in March 2015 and be for a continuous period of up to three years.
What does it cover? The fellowship provides up to £37,000 each year (for up to three years) for the following:
-Salary top up for the fellow (maximum £5,000)
-Research support to cover costs for studentships, staff, consumables or equipment (maximum £15,000)
-Travel and subsistence (maximum £12,000) to cover travel costs of the UK partner to the international partner and/or travel of the international partner to the UK
-Training to support the career development of the applicant and their research group or network (maximum £5,000)
The maximum award value cannot exceed £111,000 for a three-year period (or £37,000 per year). Please note that the Fellowship does not provide overhead costs.
Selection Criteria: All applications will be assessed by a Selection panel on the following criteria:
-The quality of the proposed research project.
-The track record of the Applicant and the overseas host organisation in the area of proposed research.
-The expected benefits for the career development of the Applicant.
-The track record and suitability of the UK-based Co-applicant and UK host organisation in the area of proposed research.
-The additional benefits for the UK – based Co-applicant and host organisation.
-Evidence that the Fellowship will lead to a long-term collaboration beyond the tenure of the award.
Notification: Results of the competition will be available approximately 4 months after the application closing date.
How to Apply: Applications can only be submitted online using the Royal Society’s electronic Grant Application and Processing (e-GAP) system.
Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline is 22 October 2014.
