The Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships support students who have previously studied at South African universities.
Harry Frederick Oppenheimer was a noted South African businessman, philanthropist and opponent of apartheid. In 1993 he endowed the Oppenheimer Fund at the University of Oxford.
The scholarship will provide a grant for living costs (at least £13,863). Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course.
Scholarship outcomes
The current status of the scholarship application process is summarised under Scholarship status on this page. During the application process, this will be updated from green (open for applications), to yellow (applications closing soon), to red (applications are closed and the selection process is underway) and finally to blue (the selection is complete and successful applicants have been informed).
Decisions are expected to be made around May 2015. If you have not heard from us by the time this webpage is updated to say that successful applicants have been notified, then please assume that your application has been unsuccessful. Due to the volume of applications we receive, we regret that we are unable to contact unsuccessful applicants individually or provide feedback on applications.
You should be applying to start a new graduate course at Oxford and must have previously studied at a South African university.
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.
Please ensure that you meet the selection criteria for your course (see the Courses page for more information).
This scholarship is not open to candidates applying for postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma courses, part-time courses or non-matriculated courses. This scholarship is also not open to applications from candidates who hold deferred offers to start in 2015-16.
If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based upon satisfactory academic progress.
There is no separate application process for this scholarship: in order to be considered, you must submit your application for graduate study by the relevant January deadline for your course (9 January 2015 for Medical Sciences, Philosophy, Politics & International Relations and Computer Science; 23 January 2015 for all other subjects).
If you do not apply as detailed above by the deadline, you will not be considered for this scholarship.
We will use the details you insert in the ‘About your qualifications and existing fields of study’ section of the graduate application form to determine your previous education institutions. For further details on how to complete this section of the graduate application form, please see the ‘About your qualifications and existing fields of study’ section of the graduate application form and also the Application guide.
To be eligible for consideration for this scholarship, applicants must be successful in being offered a place on their course after consideration of applications received by the relevant January deadline for the course. Course applications which are held over after the January deadline to be re-evaluated against applications received by the March deadline or course applications which have been put on a waiting list are not eligible for scholarship consideration.
Please note, if you are accepted onto a different course from the one you originally applied for, you should contact us as soon as you are notified of the change in order to ensure that your application for a scholarship is maintained on your new course.
