GreenMatter Fellowship Awards for South African Students, 2015

The GreenMatter Fellowship is designed to connect a community of outstanding champions, leaders and advocates who contribute positively towards managing and maintaining our South Africa’s biodiversity.


The Fellowship is unique in that it offers a range of development opportunities and welcomes graduates, young professionals and established leaders from all walks of life. It emphasises camaraderie, community and peer learning, while encouraging individual excellence.


Applications are invited for:


Postgraduate Awards: 


Cash awards of R40 000 per year for study at Masters level and R 90 000 per year for study at PhD level. Financial support is complemented by networking, mentoring and structured professional development opportunities.
 
Are you eligible?
 
To apply under this programme you must be:

• A citizen of South Africa
  
• Normally resident in South Africa
  
• In possession of a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  
• Seeking funding for a full or part-time Masters or doctoral programme at a South African higher education institute
  
• Pursuing a field of study aligned to GreenMatter’s priority skill areas

All applicants will be expected to demonstrate their commitment to the sector and to articulate how their field of study relates to our priority skills.


All eligible applicants will be also considered for these named awards:

• The Mapula Award: for students wanting to enrol at Stellenbosch University to commence PhD studies in 2015. The successful candidate will be based at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology with field work focused primarily on the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The aim is to develop a protocol for assessing the success of a Biosphere Reserve in terms of its various zones and their increasing land use intensity away from the core. The cash bursary amount is ZAR 90,000 per year.
  
• The Crossley-UCT Award: for students enrolling at the University of Cape Town to commence PhD studies in 2015. The cash bursary amount is R150 000 per year.
  
• The Crossley-Stellenbosch Award: for students enrolling at Stellenbosch University to commence PhD studies in 2015. The cash bursary amount is R150 000 per year.
  

 
GreenMatter has a strong transformation agenda and encourages applications from black South African candidates.


How to apply
The application process will reopen on Monday 14 July 2014 for study commencing in 2015. When we are open for applications you will be able to access the online form from this page. The application process will close at 3 pm BST on Friday 29 August 2014 British Summer Time, for study commencing in 2015. Applicants must apply to their chosen universities separately and awards are conditional on the applicant being offered a place at the relevant university.

Professional Development Awards
GreenMatter offers Professional Development Awards with a cash value of up to R30,000 towards a specific professional development opportunity and supported by exposure to cross-sectoral dialogues, networked mentoring opportunities and access to other leading thinkers and practitioners.
 To apply under this programme you must be:

• A citizen of South Africa
  

• Normally resident in South Africa
  
• Currently employed in a role aligned to GreenMatter’s priority areas
  

All applicants will be expected to demonstrate their commitment to the sector and to articulate the relevance of their field of study or work to the theme.
Senior Fellow Awards
The GreenMatter Fellowship includes a small number of Senior Fellows: exceptional individuals who are playing a leading role for Biodiversity. They help support human capital development and positively profile the sector, for example within strategic national or global conversations. Candidates for Senior Fellow Awards are identified by nomination only. Self-nominations are accepted.


Applications for GreenMatter Fellowship Professional Development and Senior Fellow Awards will open in January 2015.
