Postdoctoral position at the Department of Analytical Chemistry
Postdoctoral position at the Department of Analytical Chemistry. Reference number SU FV-2347-14. Last day of application: September 19, 2014.
The aim of the project is to develop an immunoaffinity based assay for determining N-linked glycosylation profiles of specific serum proteins. The assay will use immobilized antibodies or similar affinity recognition molecules for capture of the proteins to be studied. Specific enzymes are used to release the glycans attached to the proteins of interest and the relative abundance of different glycans will be determined using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI) Mass Spectrometry. Proteins connected to cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, or chronic pain will be used as target antigens and the long term goal of the project is to use the assay to generate mechanistic knowledge concerning the diseases or to increase the reliability of clinical assays through the ability of performing both quantitative analysis and glycoprofiling of the target proteins.
The project is funded by the Berzelii Center for Neuroscience at Uppsala University and the Swedish Research Council.
Tasks Project planning, laboratory work, documentation and publishing of scientific results are important parts of the work. The work may also involve supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
Required qualifications The applicant must have a PhD in analytical chemistry or a closely related subject. The PhD should be completed no later than the closing date for this application, and not be older than 3 years (discounting parental leave).
A suitable applicant should have good knowledge of protein sample preparation techniques, such as affinity extraction or size exclusion chromatography, in combination with knowledge of protein characterization or quatitation using mass spectrometry. Prior experience with either affinity extraction of proteins, glycan analysis using mass spectrometry, protein digestion and analysis or multivariate data analysis in combination with any of these is meriting. The applicant must have good english and scientific reading and writing skills. The person should also have good social skills.
Terms of employment The position is fulltime, and employment will not exceed two years. The starting date is according to agreement, preferably as soon as possible.
