Résumé Climate has and will continue to have a strong impact on the environment, on the economy and on health and safety. Societies need to adapt to present weather and climate on the one hand, but also develop new strategies for expected future conditions. It is vital that more services be created and existing ones improved, based on better monitoring and understanding, and on improved predictions of climate in the short, medium and long term.
In line with the Global Framework of Climate Services (GFCS) these initiatives are increasingly developed through partnerships and dialogue, between scientists, developers, providers and end-users, the primary aim being to support society to cope with high impact climate extremes.

Résumé The III International Conference on ENSO in November 2014 will aim to synthesize progress on ENSO research, with a detailed view of the climate-society relationship, and to share experiences in vulnerability assessment methodologies used by the climate impact studies community. This conference will bring together scientists and experts involved in research, observations and operational climate services to build on new knowledge for improving the prediction of ENSO and its regional impacts, and to discuss decision support approaches in preparation of and response to ENSO climate anomalies. Our intent is to provide a forum for efficiently linking science with societal needs, one of the envisaged World Climate Research Program (WCRP) “Grand Challenges.”

Résumé Climate change and Arctic issues, including the health of Northerners, melting sea-ice, intercontinental shipping, resource exploration, and the expansion of national jurisdictions, are moving to the top of national and international agendas. Circumpolar nations face an increased urgency to expand the observational basis needed to formulate strategies and policies that will minimize the negative impacts and maximize the positive outcomes of the on-going transformation of the Arctic. Building on the success of its annual scientific meeting, the ArcticNet Network of Centres of Excellence and its national and international partners are welcoming the international Arctic research community to Ottawa for the International Arctic Change 2014 Conference to be held at the Ottawa Convention Centre from 8-12 December 2014. Coinciding with the pinnacle of Canada’s Chairmanship of the Arctic Council, Arctic Change 2014 welcomes the participation of international researchers, students, policy and decision makers, representatives of government and non-government organizations, the private sector, northern stakeholders and media to address the global challenges and opportunities arising from climate change and modernization in the circum-Arctic. With over 1000 participants expected to attend, Arctic Change 2014 will be one of the largest trans-sectoral international Arctic research conference ever held in Canada.
