Résumé Las islas volcánicas son territorios aislados y con frecuencia densamente habitados en las que la obtención de recursos hídricos presenta características y problemáticas peculiares. Las Islas Canarias son un ejemplo de territorio en medio volcánico en unas condiciones climáticas de semiaridez donde se ha desarrollado un sistema complejo de obtención y manejo del agua. En este entorno, la tecnología asociada a la producción de los recursos no convencionales, los estudios sobre su aprovechamiento y los avances sobre cómo optimizar su gestión pueden ser transferidos a otras islas con menor experiencia en su uso. Al mismo tiempo, los conocimientos sobre cómo conservar la cantidad pero, sobre todo, la calidad de los recursos convencionales se fundamentan en la comprensión del ciclo hidrológico, siendo fundamental el estudio de las aguas subterráneas que siguen constituyendo la mayor parte de los recursos disponibles en la mayoría de las islas. Las presentes jornadas pretenden divulgar y poner en común todos aquellos aspectos relevantes de la obtención, disponibilidad, calidad, aprovechamiento y gestión, de un recurso absolutamente necesario como es el agua en terrenos e islas volcánicas. Todos los actores que participan en las decisiones sobre la gestión integral del agua deben tener voz si queremos potenciar el uso sostenible de este recurso. No es sólo producir agua o captarla, sino gestionarla de manera sostenible, justa y eficaz. Por ello se invita a participar a esta reunión científica abierta a todas las personas interesadas e involucradas en el sector para que presenten sus ideas. Con la riqueza de la diversidad de planteamientos avanzaremos sólidamente en nuestros conocimientos, sirviendo a la sociedad que nos sustenta.El I Workshop se celebró en La Laguna (Tenerife) en noviembre de 2012, con un rotundo éxito de participación y debate, por lo que esta segunda edición responde a la necesidad de ampliar el alcance de la discusión, incluyendo también Mesas Redondas.

Résumé Forests play a vital role in sustaining water resources and aquatic ecosystems. Forest disturbance, both natural (e.g., wildfire, insects, disease, windstorms, drought) and human (e.g., timber harvesting, land conversion) caused, can have a profound effect on hydrologic, geomorphic and ecologic processes. With climate change, natural disturbances are becoming more frequent and catastrophic. This, together with growing human disturbance, will undoubtedly affect water resources and consequently have significant implications for land managers and policy makers. Our understanding of hydrologic and ecologic response to accelerated environmental and land use change is key to the development of adaptive and mitigating strategies ensuring the continued security of water supplies and ecological values.

Résumé Over the centuries, civilisations have relied on the availability of clean and inexpensive water. This can no longer be taken for granted as the need for water continues to increase due to the pressure from an increasing global population demanding higher living standards. Agriculture and industry, major users of water, are at the same time those that contribute to its contamination. Water distribution networks in urban areas, as well as soiled water collection systems, present serious problems in response to a growing population as well as the need to maintain ageing infrastructures. Many technologically feasible solutions, such as desalination or pumping systems are energy demanding but, as energy costs rise, the techniques currently developed may need to be re-assessed. The Conference will address the interaction between water and energy systems.
