12.Bio-based Plastics – How do we Grow the EU Industry?

Résumé Today, bio-based plastics have an established market, demonstrating rapid growth both in Europe and globally. While Europe is currently the largest producer and user of bio-based plastics, this situation is expected to change in the future with production increasingly being based in countries where feedstocks are cheaper and where production costs are lower. Even with increasing fossil fuel prices expected to make bio-based plastics more competitive compared to fossil-derived plastics, ensuring the cost-competitiveness of EU bio-based plastics production compared to other regions globally is expected to become an increasingly difficult challenge. On top of this, several other hurdles are impeding the development of the bioplastics industry in the EU.

13.Polyolefin Additives 2014

Résumé Polyolefin Additives 2014 is focused on the performance of key polyolefin materials, particularly polyethylene and polypropylene, looking at new ways of compounding and new resins, and their application in a wide range of industries from packaging to automotive. The property requirements vary depending on the use, for example an agricultural film wants a high level of anti-UV additives, while a food contact plastic will need to be safe with low levels of migrating ingredients, and a construction application will require flame retardants, heat- and UV-stabilisation. At the same time the material must be cost-effective and easy to process. The resin selection can improve performance too and there are advances in this area.

Advances in the area of polymer physical chemistry and characterization have generated new insight into the structure-reactivity and structure-property relationships that govern the preparation and applications of new polymeric materials. The conference will focus on recent developments in the area of polymer synthesis and characterization and the application of polymeric materials in a variety of fields, including medicine and medical devices, smart materials, coatings, personal care products, structural materials, and many other areas. Researchers in polymer chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering and all others interested in learning more about the fundamental chemical principles governing polymer properties and behavior are encouraged to attend.
