Résumé The unparalleled variety of physical properties exhibited by oxides holds tremendous promise for electronic applications, especially when a combination of properties in a single device is desired. The drive for new or enhanced properties, however, goes beyond known bulk materials and includes interfaces and superlattice phases with built-in useful phenomena. The International Workshop on Oxide Electronics series has become an important venue to discuss recent advances and emerging trends in this developing field. The aim of the workshop is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for researchers—theorists as well as experimentalists—on the design, synthesis, processing, characterization, and applications of (epitaxial) functional oxide materials. Results of fundamental scientific importance as well as studies revealing the technological potential of functional oxide thin films to create devices with enhanced performance will be showcased at the 21st International Workshop on Oxide Electronics in 2014.

Résumé Glasses, polycrystalline metals, porous media and jammed granular materials – their statics and dynamical behaviors span a wide range of length and time scales and have challenged theorists and experimentalists alike. This conference will bring together mechanical engineers, materials scientists, and physicists to better understand the complex mechanical behavior of such disordered solids. We will investigate the extent to which similar concepts can be used to describe the connection between the micro- and macroscale features in these materials and capture their nonlinear and intermittent response to external driving. Particular themes of the conference will include acoustics of granular materials, mechanical response of glass-forming materials, glass-formability in bulk metallic glasses, failure of brittle materials, damage spreading and localization in micro-cracked solids, plasticity, and dislocation dynamics in metals. The conference will also focus on the application of new concepts emerging from the study of collective and nonlinear behavior of amorphous solids to the design of engineered microstructures and metamaterials.

Résumé The 2015 GRC on Chemical Reactions at Surfaces will be held in Ventura, California, during February 8-13, 2015. It will bring together an interdisciplinary group of world-recognized experts and young researchers from chemistry, physics, chemical engineering and materials science. The meeting addresses fundamental aspects of surface chemical reactions, which are related to the grand challenges facing mankind. They range from environmental interfaces, solar energy conversion to chemical energy storage and CO 2 capture. Specific emphasis will be given to bridge the gap from model studies to complex real world systems, by discussing present and future challenges in experimental and theoretical investigations. After a very successful 2013 meeting, for the first time in Europe, the goal is to again attract many high caliber scientists and young researchers from Europe and other continents in addition to the traditionally high participation from the US. We seek an equal representation of speakers from the US and non-US countries. Funds supporting the conference will be used to assist participants, especially young scientists who otherwise would be unable to attend: junior faculty members, postdoctoral fellows and advanced graduate students. Participation by young researchers will add significant value to this conference and will foster communications among current and future leaders in a field that combines academic and industrial issues.

Résumé The European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) now has more than 3,200 members from industry, government, academia and research laboratories, who meet regularly to debate recent technological developments of functional materials. The E-MRS differs from many single-discipline professional societies by encouraging scientists, engineers and research managers to exchange information on an interdisciplinary platform, and by recognizing professional and technical excellence by promoting awards for achievement from student to senior scientist level. As an adhering body of the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS), the E-MRS enjoys and benefits from very close relationships with other Materials Research organizations elsewhere in Europe and around the world. Each year, E-MRS organizes, co-organizes, sponsors or co-sponsors numerous scientific events and meetings. The major society conference, the E-MRS Spring Meeting, is organized every year and offers on average 25 topical symposia. It is widely recognized as being of the highest international significance and is the greatest of its kind in Europe with about 2,500 attendees every year. Résumé The intercalation compounds represent a very broad field of research concerning inorganic or hybrid organic-inorganic systems, either natural or synthetic. The control of the intercalation process necessitates an accurate knowledge of structure, reactivity and interfaces, at different scales. This concern pushes forward to the development of specific structural, physico-chemical or spectroscopic characterization techniques, as well as appropriate theoretical approaches. Moreover, intercalation systems are so various that they are the basis of many applications in environmental sciences, energy, drug delivery, biology, magnetism, optics or electronics. This Symposium covers the theme of the intercalation compounds in its broadest sense and gives a unique opportunity for all chemists, physicists and materials scientists to get together and share their ideas on this important field of science. The organizers welcome contributions providing new insights into all topics connected with the intercalation compounds.

Résumé Intelligent materials with integrated functionalities are required to make devices more energy efficient, autonomous, self-responding, switchable, biocompatible, and anti-bacterial. They are also integrated into novel sensor and actuator devices with significantly increased sensitivity. Such intelligent materials typically have a complex internal structure: they can be composites from different material classes like multiferroics. They might be nanostructured or hierarchically built-up, they could be bio-inspired and possess functional elements ranging from single molecules to the macro-scale.   All those materials and their design and development has to be accompanied by high-resolution analytical tools that are able to characterize the materials on all scales and, moreover, to track and reveal their function-structure relations in situ. After the successful conference in September 2013, the 2nd European Symposium on Intelligent Materials will bring together experts in the field of intelligent materials in order to present and discuss recent developments and detect future trends.   The European Symposium on Intelligent Materials 2015 is an excellent forum to get in contact with international key researchers and stimulate new collaborations for developing novel intelligent material systems, characterizing their functionality from molecular mechanisms to applications.

Résumé Gordon Research Conference is dedicated to the knowledge and understanding of the fundamental atomic and nanoscale physics and chemistry that are central to the growth of crystals for a wide array of technologies. Historically, the conference has emphasized concepts rather than specific materials, technologies or growth methods. This focus has attracted scientists with a broad range of specializations, from semiconductor thin film growth to biocrystallization, who find common inspiration in examining how the general principles of crystal thermodynamics and growth kinetics are applicable to many fields. The Crystal Growth GRC will continue the tradition of a highly interdisciplinary program. It will focus on the fundamental mechanisms underlying the self-assembly of ordered solid structures at the nanoscale that are universal across a wide array of systems: crystals grown from solution, vapor or melts; colloidal crystals, protein crystals, and biominerals; thin films deposited electrochemically or in ultra high vacuum; chemically assembled organic films; nanowires, nanoparticles and quantum dots formed in the bulk or on surfaces via strained epitaxy, and many others. We will analyze the thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanisms of nucleation and growth, the interactions between atoms, molecules, and particles that determine phase behavior and pathways of new phase formation.

Résumé Laser ablation encompasses a wide range of processes of laser interaction with matter, from delicate atomic motion in transient states to acceleration of particles to extreme energies. These processes present many challenging problems for scientists to study and understand. At the same time, laser ablation is of significant commercial importance in material processing, constituting today a multi-billion dollar industry. These topics, together with new emerging physics of laser interaction with matter and its applications for laser modification of material properties will be widely addressed. Laser ablation continues to grow and evolve, touching forefront areas in science and driving new technological trends in laser processing applications.  New processes that are producing novel types of nanostructures and nano-materials with unusual and promising properties will be presented and discussed in details.  Laser processes for delicately manipulating living cells or modifying their internal structure with unprecedented degrees of control and precision will also be shown.  The attendees will learn about short-pulse lasers that are driving extreme physical processes on record-fast time scales are opening new directions for material processing applications.
