Stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship in International Law and the History of Political Thought
The Governing Body of King's College invites applications for a Junior Research Fellowship in International Law and the History of Political Thought from 1 April 2015. Junior Research Fellows are members of the Governing Body, with full privileges of Fellows. In addition to pursuing research, a Junior Research Fellow is required to live in Cambridge or close by and to participate in College life and activity. Privileges include all meals, limited financial support for expenses associated with research, the possibility of an office and accommodation in College properties. Although these are research posts, teaching is likely to be made available if desired.
The Junior Research Fellowship in International Law and the History of Political Thought will be funded jointly by the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law and the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) with further support from King’s College. This will be a fixed-term position with a particular focus on the Intellectual History of International Law, over two years. The arrangement may be extendable up to a maximum of a further two years if further funding can be raised. The Lauterpacht Centre will provide a workspace for the successful candidate, who will be involved in a publications project in the area of the intellectual history of international law run by the Lauterpacht Centre and POLIS.
The stipend attached to all Junior Research Fellowships is £19,705.27 (pre award of doctorate) rising each year to a maximum of £25,361.73, according to age and academic qualification. Additional payment is made for teaching.

Eligibility

Graduates of any university are eligible. Candidates will usually have completed their PhD and must not have undertaken more than 2 years of postdoctoral work by 1 April 2015 (i.e. your PhD cannot have been granted before 31 March 2013). For this position the Electors may also consider and accept applications from exceptional candidates to the Junior Research Fellowship in International Law and the History of Political Thought who have more than 2 years, but less than 5, of post-doctoral experience (i.e. with a PhD granted on or after 1 April 2010).

Dates

The closing date for application is 9 am on Tuesday, 30 September 2014. Applications received after this time will not be considered. Short-listed cath or 20 January 2015. The Fellowship will begin on 1 April 2015 and will run for two years to 31 March 2017, with a possibility of renewal for a further two years to 31 March 2019.

Application

To apply, create an application on the FAS website.
Before the closing date, applicants must complete all sections of the online Fellowship Application and upload onto the website (PDF only) the following:

  • A curriculum vitae (of no more than four A4 sides) including details of higher education, degrees awarded, positions held and a list of publications.
  • A document (of no more than three A4 sides in length) containing a statement of current research and proposed research to be undertaken during the Fellowship.

Applicants must also arrange for three letters of recommendation. Each referee will be asked to provide the names of two further readers, not in the candidate's institution, to whom work might be sent if the candidate is long-listed. It is the duty of the candidate to ensure that the referees submit the references and the names of readers before the closing date.
Your referees will need to provide their references through the FAS website. They will be sent an email containing a link to do this. Referees unable to submit references electronically via the FAS website may write directly to the Provost's Personal Assistant, King's College, Cambridge or email jrf.kings@casc.cam.ac.uk .
Note that all application materials must be in the English language.
The application will not be considered in the competition until it has been submitted and all references and the names of additional readers have been received. An email will be sent once this has occurred.
After the closing date, the College will contact selected applicants by email to ask for samples of written work, up to 20,000 words (either published papers or chapters of a doctoral thesis).

Travel expenses

A successful candidate travelling from outside the UK to take up a Fellowship may claim travel and removal expenses up to a level agreed in advance with the Bursar of the College.

Further questions

If you have any further questions regarding any aspect of the competition, please email Pat Wilson, the JRF administrator, at jrf.kings@casc.cam.ac.uk
