The Department of Astrophysics offers a PhD position within the extragalactic chair of Prof. Bodo Ziegler.
Period of employment: 4 years (starting 1st December, 2014)
Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week
Occupation group in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc)
On top of this relevant chargeable work experience determines the assessment to a particular salary grade.
Areas of work: The position is for PhD research work in the field of physical parameters of galaxies and their evolution. Important aspects are structure, kinematics, stellar populations and star formation.
The main source for the investigations will be observational data, in particular spectroscopy in the optical wavelength regime. Thus, experience in reduction of spectra and their analysis will be a main criterion in the selection process. Basic knowledge of astronomical software is required. The project could be embedded in large international collaborations like CALIFA or CLASH.
In addition to the research towards a Dr degree, contributions are expected within the group, the Department of Astrophysics and within international projects as well as with proposals for new observational data and third-party funding and with student education (holding classes due to extent regulations of wage agreement is part of the scope of work).
Profile:Applicants must have a diploma or master degree in astronomy, astrophysics, physics or mathematics. Basic knowledge of astronomical software, in particular for reduction of spectra and IFU data.
