Paris IAS Research Fellowships for International Applicants in France, 2016-2017

The Paris Institute for Advanced Studies welcomes applications from high level international scholars and scientists in the fields of the humanities, the social sciences and related fields for periods of five or nine months, during the academic year 2016-2017.
The Paris IAS will host around twenty guest researchers, allowing them to work freely on the project of their choice. The researchers will benefit from the scientific environment of the Institute and have the opportunity to create contacts with researchers in the academic institutions of Greater Paris.

Applicants may request residencies for the following periods:
- 1 September 2016 to 31 January 2017 (5 months)
or - 1 October 2016 to 30 June 2017 (9 months)
or - 1 February to 30 June 2017 (5 months)

RESEARCH PROGRAMS

Research at the Paris IAS takes place inside two types of programs: the non-thematic bottom-up program based on free individual initiatives, and the thematic program, presently related to building bridges between the humanities and social sciences on the one hand, and the cognitive and neuro-sciences, on the other.
The bottom-up non-thematic program
The primary mission of the Paris IAS is to be a research centre anchored in the humanities and social sciences, open to any discipline and subject within this domain. Its aim is to enable a fruitful dialogue between researchers from different cultural and disciplinary backgrounds. Approximately 3/4 of the fellows will be selected in the framework of this program, for which the excellence of the researcher and his/her project is the essential criterion.
The Thematic program: The mind and the brain. The interface between humanities and social sciences and neuroscience
Beside applications within the above mentioned non-thematic program, the Paris IAS invites applications centred on the dialogue between the humanities, social sciences, and the cognitive and neuro-sciences. Approximately 1/4 of the fellows will be selected in relation to this theme.
The exponential development of scientific data on genetics and the brain gives us more and more insight on the functioning of the human being in its environment. It is becoming increasingly difficult to reflect on topics such as the Human, mind and consciousness in the humanities and social sciences without taking into account the neuro-anatomic and neuro-functional data produced by life sciences and neuroscience in particular. Reciprocally, neuroscience cannot claim to understand the Human if they do not incorporate the knowledge built up by the humanities.
The aim of this program is to enable the humanities and social sciences to renew their approaches to classical topics or to open new fields of research.

STAYING AT THE PARIS IAS

The Paris IAS provides its fellows with a monthly remuneration (or complement of remuneration) and a total or partial coverage of their housing expenses. It also pays for their round-trip ticket to Paris.
Status and remuneration
Fellows who maintain their status in their home institution benefit from a stipend. For others, the Paris IAS proposes a short term research contract with salary. In all cases, the remuneration depends on the fellow’s personal and professional situation and on whether he or she continues to receive pay from his/her home institution. The benchmark pay scale corresponds to prevailing standards in French academia.
Housing
To facilitate housing for its guest researchers, the Paris IAS has formed partnerships with two residences that host international researchers: Maison Suger and Les Récollets. It covers the rent of the apartments in these residences. If a fellow chooses to live in a private apartment, the IAS can provide a housing stipend which amount varies on the basis of the family situation of the fellow.
Travel
Travel costs from the fellow’s home to Paris and back are covered by the IAS (economy class).
Insurances
The IAS’ fellows will need to get a personal insurance covering all risks during their stay, for themselves as well as the people accompanying them.
Support for research
During their stay, the fellows will have an office at the Paris IAS (Hôtel de Lauzun) with a computer, Internet access, and printer. The IAS provides meeting and conference rooms.
The fellows can receive financial support and materials for their work and research activities. This includes organising scientific events (colloquia, seminars, lectures, doctoral training, etc.) and research-related travel. Support for the translation and publication of their research texts can also be proposed.
The Paris IAS and its partner institutions have signed agreements enabling the fellows to enjoy special access and lending privileges in the main Paris university-based research libraries. In addition, the fellows can have their books and documents delivered directly from the libraries to the institute.

CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY

Researchers from all countries are eligible.
Applicants who have spent more than a total of 12 months in France during the last 3 years prior to the application are not eligible.
This call for applications is open to:

Senior university professors or researchers holding a permanent position in a university or research institution and having a minimum of 10 years of full time research experience after their PhD (at the time of the application).
Junior scholars having the status of postdoctoral researcher or holding a position in a university or research institution, and having a minimum of 2 and maximum of 9 years of research experience after the PhD (at the time of the application).

The institute is bilingual. Knowledge of English is required. The applicants are also expected to understand French, as scientific and social activities are held in French and English.

CRITERIA OF SELECTION

The main criteria of selection are the same for white and thematic programs:

the scientific quality of the project, its innovative character and its importance for the scientific community;
the career path of the applicant;
the quality of the scientific contacts of the applicants in France, and the applicant’s capacity to collaborate with French scholars and research teams.

THE APPLICATION

The application, in English or French, must be submitted via an online application system (see our website http://paris-iea.fr/en/how-apply for a detailed description of the procedure). Paper or e-mail applications are not accepted.
The application consists of the following items:

the completed application form;
a curriculum vitae (10 pages maximum) including a list of publications and a list of the 5 publications considered as most important by the applicant;
a detailed research proposal (25 000 characters maximum spaces included. The proposal should include :
- theme
- state of the art in the field, innovative character of the proposal
- methodology or theoretical framework
- expected outcomes
- work planning, timescales
- existing or planned scientific cooperation and contacts in France
- bibliography (books and articles cited)
a letter of cooperation signed by a member of a university or research institution based in France. Preference will be given to projects conducted in cooperation with the partners of the IAS (Universities of Paris 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10, EHESS, EPHE, ENS Cachan, ENS, Paris, FMSH)
a list of four topics on which the applicant could give a lecture during the fellowship
in the case of Junior Fellows (2 to 9 years after the PhD at the time of the application), two letters of recommendation
the name of three experts with whom the applicant has not collaborated in the past who could review the application

Appel à candidatures pour une résidence de recherche de L’Institut d’études avancées de Paris lors de l’année universitaire 2016-2017

L’Institut d’études avancées de Paris recrute des chercheurs internationaux de haut niveau en sciences humaines et sociales et domaines connexes pour des périodes de 5 ou 9 mois au cours de l’année universitaire 2016-2017.

L’IEA offre à une vingtaine de chercheurs la possibilité de développer ou de poursuivre un projet de recherche, dans le cadre de son programme blanc ou de son programme thématique autour des neurosciences, en bénéficiant d’un environnement scientifique de premier plan. L’institut les soutient dans l’établissement de contacts scientifiques avec les institutions universitaires et de recherche de Paris et de la Région Île-de-France.

Les candidats peuvent postuler pour des séjours se déroulant lors des périodes suivantes :

PROGRAMMES DE RECHERCHE

Les recherches menées à l’IEA s’inscrivent dans deux types de programmes : le programme blanc, fondé sur des initiatives individuelles, et le programme thématique sur les neurosciences.

Programme Blanc

La vocation primaire de l’IEA de Paris est d’être un centre de recherche ancré dans les sciences humaines et sociales, ouvert à toutes les disciplines et tous les sujets dans ces domaines. Son objectif est de favoriser le dialogue entre des chercheurs de cultures nationales et scientifiques différentes. Trois quarts environ des candidatures seront sélectionnées dans le cadre du programme blanc, pour lequel le critère de sélection essentiel est l’excellence du projet et de son porteur.

Programme thématique : L’esprit et le cerveau. L’interface sciences humaines et sociales – neurosciences

En parallèle des recherches plurithématiques qui sont au cœur de son identité, l’IEA de Paris développe une orientation scientifique plus spécifique axée sur le dialogue entre sciences humaines et sociales et neurosciences. Un quart des candidats environ sera sélectionné sur cette thématique.

Le développement exponentiel des données scientifiques sur la génétique et le cerveau nous apprend toujours davantage sur le fonctionnement de l’être humain dans son environnement. Il devient difficile de continuer à penser l’Homme, l’esprit et la conscience au sein des sciences humaines et sociales sans prendre en compte les données neuro-anatomiques et neuro-fonctionnelles issues des recherches dans les sciences de la vie et les neurosciences en particulier. De la même façon, les neurosciences ne peuvent pas prétendre comprendre l’Homme sans intégrer les savoirs acquis par les humanités.

L’IEA a donc choisi d’ouvrir un dialogue privilégié entre les sciences humaines et sociales et les neurosciences, et tout particulièrement les neurosciences cognitives, qui étudient les mécanismes neurobiologiques et les phénomènes psychologiques qui sous-tendent la cognition (i.e. perception, mémoire, imagination, conscience, raisonnement, émotions etc.). L’objectif est que ce dialogue permette aux sciences humaines et sociales de renouveler leurs approches d’objets classiques ou d’investir de nouveaux champs de recherche.

CONDITIONS DE SEJOUR

L’IEA de Paris accorde à ses chercheurs résidents une rémunération mensuelle (ou un complément de rémunération), une prise en charge totale ou partielle des frais d’hébergement et un remboursement de leur voyage aller-retour à Paris.

Statut et rémunération

Le résident bénéficie d’une convention d’allocation lorsque sont statut est maintenu dans son université d’origine. Pour les autres résidents, un contrat de travail à durée déterminée est proposé. Dans tous les cas, le montant de la rémunération est modulé selon la situation personnelle et professionnelle du résident et selon que celui-ci conserve ou non un salaire de son institution d’origine. Le barème de rémunération de référence correspond aux grilles en vigueur dans le cadre académique français.

Hébergement

Afin de faciliter le logement des chercheurs invités à Paris, l’IEA a développé des partenariats avec les centres d’accueil Maison Suger et Les Récollets. Il prend en charge le loyer de ses chercheurs dans ces résidences. Dans le cas où un chercheur est logé dans un appartement privé, l’institut peut participer au paiement de son loyer en lui proposant une allocation d’un montant variable selon sa situation familiale.

Voyages

Les frais de voyage pour une aller-retour entre le domicile du résident et Paris sont pris en charge par l’IEA à concurrence du tarif en classe économique.

Assurance

Les résidents veilleront à se doter d’une assurance personnelle couvrant les risques encourus lors de leur séjour, pour eux mêmes ainsi que les accompagnants.

Moyens de recherche

Pendant leur séjour, les résidents disposent dans les locaux de l’IEA à l’Hôtel de Lauzun d’un bureau équipé d’un ordinateur, d’un accès internet et de moyens d’impression. L’IEA met à leur disposition des salles de réunion et de colloque.

Les résidents peuvent bénéficier d'un soutien financier et matériel pour leurs travaux et activités de recherche. Ceci inclut en particulier l’organisation de manifestations scientifiques (colloque, journée d’étude, conférence, actions de formation doctorale) et les déplacements pour recherche. Une aide ponctuelle pour la traduction et la publication de textes est également proposée.

Les accords passés entre l’IEA et ses institutions partenaires permettent aux résidents de bénéficier dès leur arrivée d’un accès privilégié et d’un droit au prêt étendu dans les principales bibliothèques parisiennes. Un service de livraison d’ouvrages permet aux résidents de commander et de recevoir à l’IEA les documents souhaités sans avoir à se déplacer.

CRITERES D’ÉLIGIBILITÉ

Sont éligibles les chercheurs de toutes les nationalités.

Ne sont pas éligibles les candidats qui ont séjourné en France un total de plus de 12 mois dans les trois années précédant cet appel (par exemple en tant que chargés de cours, boursiers ou contractuels dans un établissement d'enseignement ou de recherche français).

Cet appel à candidatures concerne :

Les professeurs d’université et chercheurs « séniors » de haut niveau en sciences humaines et sociales et disciplines associées, titulaires d'un doctorat et occupant un poste universitaire ou de recherche (au minimum 10 années d’expérience dans la recherche à temps plein à la date de la candidature).

Les chercheurs « juniors » justifiant d’au minimum 2 années et au maximum 9 années d’expérience dans la recherche après le doctorat (à la date de la candidature).

Dans les deux cas, la connaissance de l’anglais et la compréhension du français sont requises.

CRITÈRES DE SÉLECTION

Les principaux critères de sélection sont les mêmes pour les programmes blancs et le programme thématique :

la qualité scientifique du projet, son caractère novateur et son intérêt pour la communauté scientifique ;

le parcours scientifique du candidat ;

la qualité des contacts scientifiques du candidat en France et son aptitude à collaborer avec des équipes et chercheurs français.

une lettre attestant de la coopération du chercheur avec un établissement universitaire ou de recherche situé en France, signée par un membre de cet établissement. Une préférence sera accordée aux projets menés en collaboration avec l’une des institutions partenaires de l’IEA (Universités Paris 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 et 10, EHESS, EPHE, ENS Cachan, ENS Paris, FMSH);

une liste de 4 sujets sur lesquels le candidat pourra donner une conférence lors de son séjour, à l’IEA ou dans une de ses institutions partenaires ;

pour les chercheurs juniors (2 à 9 ans après le doctorat à la date de la candidature) : deux lettres de recommandation ;

trois propositions d’experts qui pourraient évaluer la candidature déposée. Les chercheurs désignés, français ou étrangers, ne doivent pas avoir actuellement ou avoir eu dans le passé de collaboration avec le candidat.
