The Eldred-Waverley Scholarship at Linacre College was established in 2012. It funds students from sub-Saharan Africa to study the MSc African Studies at Oxford.
The scholarship is funded from three sources:
- The Waverley Fund, which was established in 2001 and aims to fund excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds;
- Linacre College, which is a college of the University of Oxford; and
- The University's African Studies Centre, which is one of the world’s leading centres for African Studies.
The scholarship will cover 100% of University and college fees, a grant for living costs (of at least £10,397) and a return flight from your home country to UK. Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course.
You should be applying to start the MSc African Studies at Oxford and you must be ordinarily resident in sub-Saharan Africa. You should be intending to return to your country of ordinary residence once your course is completed.
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.
This scholarship is only tenable at Linacre College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Linacre College in order to take up the scholarship.
Please ensure that you meet the selection criteria for your course (see the Courses page for more information).
This scholarship is not open to applications from candidates who hold deferred offers to start in 2015-16.
Apply
There is no separate application process for this scholarship: in order to be considered, you must submit your application for graduate study by 23 January 2015.
If you do not apply as detailed above by the deadline, you will not be considered for this scholarship.
We will use the details you insert in the ‘Nationality and ordinary residence’ section of the graduate application form to assess your country of ordinary residence. For a definition of ordinary residency and further details on how to complete this section of the graduate application form, please see the 'Nationality and ordinary residence' section of the graduate application form and also the Application guide.

To be eligible for consideration for this scholarship, applicants must be successful in being offered a place on their course after consideration of applications received by the relevant January deadline for the course. Course applications which are held over after the January deadline to be re-evaluated against applications received by the March deadline or course applications which have been put on a waiting list are not eligible for scholarship consideration.
Please note, if you are accepted onto a different course from the one you originally applied for, you should contact us as soon as you are notified of the change in order to ensure that your application for a scholarship is maintained on your new course. A change of course may mean that you are no longer eligible for this scholarship.
