School of International Development Excellence Awards for International Students

School of International Development Scholarships

The School of International Development is offering a £1,000 fee waiver to all international students who have obtained the equivalent of a UK 1st Class degree. All students who have completed their undergraduate degree at UEA will receive an additional 20% fee reduction.

How to apply: All eligible candidates with a 1st Class degree to whom the School have made an offer are automatically given the £1,000 fee waiver.

School of International Development Full Fees Scholarship

A full fee award may be offered to one international taught applicant on the basis of academic excellence (e.g. first class degree) and their personal statement.
How to apply: All eligible candidates to whom the School have made an offer are automatically considered for nomination.
Deadline for Applications (full fee scholarships): 15 March 2015.
Please note that all applicants are expected to have met the School's English language requirements and been offered and accepted a place on the course by this date.  Successful applicants will be contacted by the admissions department.

School of International Development Scholarships for students from Japan, Korea, Mexico, Brazil, Philippines and USA

International Development Excellence Scholarships - partial fees awards may be offered on the basis of academic excellence and their personal statement.
Eligibility: USA (4 scholarship of £3000), Japan (2 scholarships of £3000), Korea (2 scholarships of £2000), Mexico (1 scholarship of £4000), Brazil (1 scholarship of £4000) and Philippines (1 scholarship of £4000)
How to apply: All eligible candidates to whom the School have made an offer are automatically considered for nomination.
Deadline for applications: 30 April 2015 (28 February for Japanese applicants)

Lord Walston Scholarship

One Lord Walston Scholarship may be available, on the basis of academic excellence, for applicants from Africa who are working in natural resource based projects (agriculturalist/natural resource) applying for a place on the MA Agriculture and Rural Development, the MSc Environment and International Development or the MSc Climate Change and International Development. The Scholarship covers Full Fees and Maintenance (living expenses). 
How to apply: All eligible candidates to whom the School have made an offer are automatically considered for nomination.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID), and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the United Kingdom. One award may be available to candidates, under 35 years old, from a developing Commonwealth country who have been offered a place on an advanced taught course. The School is able to nominate one student per year for this scholarship. All candidates to whom the School have made an offer are automatically considered for nomination and the appropriate application forms are automatically sent to the student selected. Students already studying in the developed countries are not eligible; neither are employees of government or parastatal bodies. The award includes Full Fees, Maintenance and Travel costs.

How to apply: All eligible candidates to whom the School have made an offer are automatically considered for nomination and the appropriate application forms are automatically sent to the student selected.

3ie Scholarship

One 3ie scholarship is available for applicants from less developed countries who apply for a place on the Msc Impact Evaluation for International Development. The Scholarship covers £10,000 of the course tuition fee and one return economy flight.

Marshal Papworth Scholarship

Up to 5 Marshal Papworth Scholarships may be available, on the basis of academic excellence, for applicants from developing countries working in natural resource based projects (agriculturalist/natural resource) applying for a place on the MA Agriculture and Rural Development, the MSc Development Economics, the MSc Environment and International Development, the MSc Water Security and International Development and the MSc Climate Change and International Development.  The Scholarship varies from £12,000 to £17,000 as determined by the Marshal Papworth committee. School of International Development Internal Bursaries

All UEA Undergraduates who successfully register to progress on to any of our International Development Masters courses are eligible to receive a 20% Fees Award. Please contact admissions@uea.ac.uk for further information.
Eligibility: Home/EU/International students.
How to apply: All eligible candidates to whom the School have made an offer are automatically considered for nomination.

Other scholarships available to International students

General (Non-UK Residents)

Students planning to come to Britain to study should seek information from their own Ministry of Education and from the nearest British Council Office, British Embassy or British High Commission. Students already in the UK can obtain information from their own Embassy or High Commission and the British Council regional or London offices. Further information on funding may be obtained from the UK Council for Overseas Students Affairs.

Chevening Scholarships – MA Media and International Development

The MA in Media and International Development has a three year agreement with the British Foreign and Commonwealth office (FCO) and the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) to award one student a Chevening bursary to cover fees, accommodation and subsistence. To qualify, students must currently be employed as a full-time staff member of one of CBA's member organisations (Full Members and Affiliates), from a developing country in the Commonwealth. World Council of Churches

Candidates who are directly engaged in church service, or community service, or who have previous theological education may be eligible to apply for a World Council of Churches scholarship. Candidates should normally have had some working experience related to their proposed field of study. Applications should be made through a candidate's local church or church-related organisation - a WCC application form is made available by the National Correspondent only after local selection has taken place. Further details may be obtained directly from the World Council of Churches Scholarship Secretary, 150 Route de Ferney, PO Box 66, 1211 Geneva 20, Switzerland.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries. Scholarships can be offered annually by the UK to commonwealth citizens resident in a Commonwealth country other than Britain itself. Awards are for university postgraduate study or research, and are administered by the Department for International Development.
Eligibility: International students from a Commonwealth country.
How to apply: Candidates must apply through the appropriate agency in their country of normal residence.

World Bank

The World Bank Scholarship Program and the Fellowships Program are vehicles for knowledge sharing and capacity building in the developing world. The Programs provide opportunities for graduate and postgraduate studies leading to master's and doctoral degrees in development-related fields for mid-career professionals from eligible developing countries. Applicants must be a national of a World Bank member country, under 45 years of age, hold a bachelor's degree with superior grades, have two years of recent employment in economic development activities and have been admitted to a university renowned for development research and teaching.

Asfari Masters Scholarship

Scholarships are open to candidates who meet the following criteria:
• Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese nationals resident in one of those three countries or recently moved elsewhere in the region (including Syrians displaced in Lebanon, Turkey,
Iraq or Jordan, Palestinians living in Syria or Lebanon, and Palestinian citizens of Israel);
• Up to the age of 40;
• Strong academic record and level of English (candidates must secure an offer from one of the Foundation's partner universities to be considered for a scholarship);
• Commitment to returning to their home country after graduation to use the skills, knowledge and experience gained during their time in the UK for the benefit of their country and/or society (successful candidates will be asked to sign an agreement with the Foundation which includes this commitment).
Application process and deadline
Interested candidates should first apply to the relevant university and obtain an offer. They then need to email scholarships@asfarifoundation.org.uk  for an application form, which should be submitted to the Foundation along with the valid offer letter from one of the Foundation's partner universities (Edinburgh or UEA).  In their application, candidates will be asked to explain how their chosen subject will be of value to their country (or the wider Middle East region) and how it will contribute towards their future plans. Completed scholarship applications will be considered by the Asfari Foundation and candidates may be invited to attend an interview by phone or Skype with Asfari Foundation staff. The deadline for applications to the Foundation is 14 April 2015.

Said Foundation Masters Scholarships

The Said foundation works to improve the life chances of young people by providing them with opportunities to receive good education and care.  They provide postgraduate scholarships to young people from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan at UK universities, to help them become leaders of innovation and change in key sectors of development in their countries.
To apply for Said Foundation Scholarship at University of East Anglia you must:

  • A good first degree
  • Evidence of English language ability
  • Be under 40 years of age, from Syria, Lebanon, Palestine or Jordan and living in the Middle East.
  • Have a minimum of two years' work experience
  • Hold an offer for a University of East Anglia Master's degree
  • Undertake to return to the Middle East on completion of studies.

Applications for the Scholarship are made direct to the Foundation and not to the University of East Anglia.  For application forms and further information please refer to the scholarship section of the KRSF website
