Résumé The new Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on "Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage" will create a new forum for discussion at the frontiers of carbon management research, including fundamental scientific studies of CO2 interactions with novel materials for Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) as well as science policy essential for the deployment of CCUS. Predictions of global energy usage suggest a continued increase in carbon emissions and rising concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere unless major changes are made to the way energy is produced and used. Thus, CCUS is one of the most urgent technological and societal challenges faced by humanity. Until now, these technologies have been developed independently of one another, which has resulted in complex and economically challenged designs without much discussion on the societal issues for their implementation. Thus, a venue for truly multi-disciplinary, multi-dimensional discussion is critical to provide transformative research directions in CCUS. The GRC on CCUS will facilitate research collaborations that effectively cross the boundaries of the natural sciences, engineering, and the social and economic sciences to develop new understanding, theories, models and technologies as well as assessment tools for the developed technologies and their implementation plans for global communities. Discussion of emerging ideas and findings in this area will stimulate cutting edge research in the field, and eventually contribute to new approaches to capture and safely store anthropogenic CO2, while investigating the CO2 conversion to chemicals and fuels as one of the long-term alternatives. Topics will include a full range of materials studies involving chemical and physical interactions with CO2 at multi- time and spatial scales ranging from molecular level to geological scales, with particular emphasis on their interrelations with the current and novel energy conversion systems. The GRC will also include the study of science policy. While some of the CCUS technologies are still immature for detailed economic or regulatory discussions, there are a number of technologies (e.g., CO2 capture using MEA solvents, enhanced oil recovery using CO2 and subsequent CO2 storage in depleted oil reservoir) which are currently being demonstrated in large scale and these cases studies will allow valuable regulatory and policy discussions. Of course, being a science conference we aim to focus the discussion on the interplay of policy with science and technology.

Résumé The conference TRENDS Transition to Renewable Energy Devices and Systems takes up relevant topics in the area of the transformation of the energy system. The concept of the conference is to highlight Game Changers and to look into Missing Links in order to achieve the G8 goals of reducing 80 % of the CO2 emission by 2050 and realize a major share of renewable energies by 2030. This conference focuses on fuels for transportation and the respective technology in propulsion and auxiliary power provision. The interaction of these two threads will be emphasized. On the fuel side a realistic quantitative assessment of the potential of alternative fuels and their production paths will be discussed as well as the cost issues associated with the transformation.
