| Accretion and Outflows throughout the scales: from young stellar objects to AGNs Date de début 01 Oct 2014 [ID=631661] Haut de la page Lieu ENS-Lyon, France Page web http://outflows2014.sciencesconf.org/ 48.Accretion and Outflows throughout the scales: from young stellar objects to AGNs Dates 01 Oct 2014 → 03 Oct 2014 [ID=632194] Haut de la page Lieu Lyon, France Résumé Accretion and outflows are common processes in astrophysical objects on a wide range of physical scales. Those include young stellar and binary systems, active galactic nuclei, and more. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial as they fuel some of the Universe's most powerful events, providing excellent laboratories for very high energy physics, as well as regulating the life cycle of the stars and galaxies. Accretion and outflows are intimately linked on all scales through the complex interplay of gravity, hydrodynamics, magnetic fields and radiative transfer, the details of which are still being explored. Numerical experiments remain today the best approach to study these processes and test theoretical predictions when confronted to observation s. The workshop aims to bring together people working on accretion and associated outflows in different astrophysical objects using advanced numerical and theoretical models, and to make the link with the most recent observations. The importance of large scale effects, microphysical processes, particle acceleration and coronal physics will be addressed. Astrophysical topics will also include gravitational collapse and star formation, accretion discs, X-ray binaries, microquasars, AGNs and jets. The last age of discovery occurred about 100 years ago at the turn of the 20th century with the advent of Quantum Mechanics; the 2nd regime in the progression Classical Mechanics - Quantum Mechanics and now to the advent of the 3rd regime: Unified Field Mechanics. Our goal is that this IXth Vigier conference will create a place in history like the series of Solvay Conferences (Conseils Solvay) beginning in Brussels, Belgium 1n 1911, where Niels Bohr (5th, 1927) told Einstein to 'stop telling God what to do.' Whereas the gravitational nature of DM is now firmly established, the concrete microscopic properties of the hidden sector remain essentially unknown. However, through a coherent effort, a non-gravitational detection of DM is a realistic possibility within the next decade. It is one in which theoretical models of the hidden sector are steadily confronted with the advances in the three main experimental forefronts: 1) direct detection experiments, 2) astrophysical probes, and 3) production in high-energy or high-luminosity colliders. The following questions will be addressed in this workshop: - Do the experimental and observatonal data obtained by 2015 show indications for a non-gravitational nature of DM? - Which particle properties can we deduce from the measured data? - How are the LHC results impacting on the prospects of direct and indirect searches? - What are the most promising strategies? Many hours of telescope time and computational effort have been employed in what is one the most pressing issues of modern science, and many findings have driven us ever nearer to understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. Where are we now? Have we reached a solid theoretical framework for galaxy formation and evolution? What else do we need in order to find the still elusive first galaxies, hosting the first generation of stars and the very first AGN in the Universe? What can theory tell us about where to look and how to look into this seemingly impenetrable problem? Do we know how galaxies assemble and how feedback processes take place and drive their evolution? How do galaxies depend on, or determine, their environment? How is this work driving the development and fine-tuning of the next generation of telescopes and their respective surveys? The Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics of the University of Lisbon aims at aiding in this effort, hosting once again an international conference aimed at discussing galaxy formation and evolution in the light of the deepest astronomical observations. The focus is on the latest observational results, and on how they shape, and are shaped by, the latest theoretical framework. These are now known to play a key role in determining the growth of galaxies across cosmic time, but the mechanisms by which they are launched remain unclear. Recent progress on probing the properties of the accretion flow at the smallest radii include new spectral-timing techniques to identify the reverberation signal from the disc, as well as spectral studies of the ultrafast outflows, the broad iron line and soft X-ray excess. The stellar mass black holes provide a natural comparison sample, and again new data and new techniques are allowing us to focus in on the regions closest to the event horizon. The time is ripe for a conference to similarly focus on these extreme regions, to determine the structure of the accretion flow on the smallest scales and its relation to relativistic outflows and jets. The Euclid mission aims at understanding why the expansion of the Universe is accelerating and what is the nature of the source responsible for this acceleration which physicists refer to as dark energy. Euclid is in full development towards a launch in 2020 and excitment is building on the extraordinary opportunity that this mission will offer to solve one of the most challenging question of contemporary Physics and Cosmology. A formidable survey machine, Euclid will also probe fundamental questions on the formation and evolution of galaxies. The Euclid Consortium (EC) is an organisation which brings together teams of researchers, technical and administrative staff in public research laboratories funded by their national agencies and local organisations in Europe as well as in the USA. The detection of near Earth analogs will require an increase in Doppler measurement precision to at least 0.1 m/s. The community has worked hard to reach 1 m/s precision; now we need new solutions to measure masses of rocky planets around nearby stars. The meeting will be driven by the following questions: What is the state of the art precision at various facilities? To better understand this, we invite participants to enter their data in a "beauty contest" showing examples of the best time series measurements (RV or photometry) from the facilities that they use. When presenting, contestants should address the following: , describe the data (time span of observations, number of observations, internal error, RMS per hour/night/week), why are the noteable qualities of these data? (e.g., precision improvements achieved over time? particularly low RMS scatter? high precision? high cadence? long time baseline?) , what are the biggest concerns about your data? , what telescope and spectrometer were used?, briefly describe the analysis procedure (wavelength calibration, cross-correlation, forward modeling?) , was any filtering used? trends removed? jitter subtracted? rejected outlier data? . What is required to reach 1 m/s Doppler precision? What is required to reach 0.5 m/s? 0.1 m/s? , Is stellar noise a fundamental limit to RV precision? , What are the science frontiers in exoplanetary science? How does PRV contribute? , What are the needs of the community (on a 10-year horizon)? .
