Description of scholarship

Talented students in the final phase of their Master studies or recent Master graduates who will pursue a career as PhD student/employee at VU University in the nearby future. With this scholarship, students are able to get research experience abroad even before the start of their PhD programme. The VU IRPP grant can cover up to 80% of the costs of this research period abroad (up to a maximum of €5.000,-).

Requirements

VU IRPP is exclusively meant for future PhD students at VU University who already agreed upon a PhD position with the involved faculty and can prove this on paper. It does not matter at which university these students are finalising or have finalised their Master Degree; international as well as national candidates can apply. Please note: graduates can only apply within one year after obtaining a Master Degree. The research period abroad has to be a contiguous period of at least one month and not longer than one year.

Information

Value and purpose of grant:

The grant is meant to cover the costs of living, accommodation, travelling, etc. The exact amount of the grant is determined based on the budget plan submitted by the applicant and depends on the destination and duration of the research period. The grant covers a maximum of 80% of the expected costs, with a maximum of €5.000,-.

Grant award period:

The grant is paid out in two terms: 2/3 of the total amount is paid out before departure and the remaining amount is paid out after the applicant has returned. This last term is only paid out if both a report and a final version of the budget plan is received and approved by the International Office of VU University. If it turns out that the applicant received additional substantial contribution from other grants or scholarship, the amount of the grant may be downsized.

• Letter of recommendation from the VU University lecturer who will guide the PhD project;
  
• Proof that the applicant has obtained/will obtain a PhD position at VU University;
  
• Curriculum vitae;
  
• Project description of the planned research activities abroad;
  
• Budget plan: overview of all income and expenditure;
  
• Correspondence with the guest institute showing that the specific institute agrees to host the student during the planned research period.
