Applications are invited for the KJ Bathe SEMC doctoral scholarships available for South African and scholars from other African countries to study at University of Cape Town. Candidates who in 2015 will be registering for the first or second year of a PhD degree at the University of Cape Town are eligible to apply for these awards. -a Master’s degree in Engineering Mechanics, Structural Engineering or related fields
-applied for and secured a place to study towards a PhD degree in Structural Mechanics, and
-secured an academic supervisor within the Structural Engineering & Mechanics Group at UCT.
-Candidates who in 2015 will be registering for the first or second year of a PhD degree at the University of Cape Town are eligible to apply for these awards. Students who will register for the third year of the doctoral degree in 2015 are ineligible.
-Successful candidates will be permitted to hold other scholarships or bursaries to a total value of no more than R250,000. The university reserves the right to recover the amount in excess of R250,000 from this award.

Scholarship Description: The KJ Bathe SEMC Doctoral Scholarships have been established by Professor Klaus-Jurgen Bathe, a UCT Alumnus and recipient of a DSc (Eng) honoris causa from UCT, together with Professor Alphose Zingoni, Professor of Structural Engineering & Mechanics at UCT, and founder and chair of the SEMC (Structural Engineering, Mechanics & Computation) series of international conferences at UCT. The awards are intended to promote advanced research in Theoretical & Computational Structural Mechanics in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town.

Duration of award(s): The duration of scholarships is one year. However, at the end of the first year of the award, renewal of the scholarship will be considered for a further one or two years, up to the end of the first three years of PhD registration. The scholarship will not extend beyond 3 years of full-time PhD registration. Renewals will only be made on evidence of satisfactory progress.
What does it cover? The scholarships are each valued at R100,000 per annum and are tenable for one year.
Selection Criteria: Eligible applications will be considered by the Chair of SEMC and Head of the Structural Engineering & Mechanics Group at UCT, together with a sub-committee. The main criteria for selection are the academic record of the applicant and the soundness of the research proposal.

How to Apply: Interested candidates are required to submit the following:
-a letter of interest indicating the intended area of study;
-a summary of the proposed research (no longer than three A4 pages);
-a certified copy of a South African ID or an international passport;
-a full CV which includes publications and/or details of conferences attended;
-certified copies of all academic transcripts (please do not send in any certificates); and
-references from at least TWO ACADEMICS who have taught or supervised the candidate in a postgraduate degree.
