Radiation Safety Officer Training Overview
The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires any organization using radioactive materials to designate a radiation safety officer (RSO) responsible for radiation protection matters. Radiation Safety Officer Training is designed to meet these licensing requirements and allow your organization to update or apply for a radioactive materials license.
This course provides the hands-on experience necessary to act as a radiation safety officer in laboratory settings. It is unique in concentrating specifically on radionuclides used in laboratory facilities and the challenges facing laboratory RSOs. Optional sessions allow you to focus your learning on radiation protection topics relevant to your work.
You will learn to implement a radiation protection program, comply with regulatory requirements, and maintain a safe laboratory environment. During the course, you will gain an understanding of important compliance issues and the skills needed to protect employees and patients.
Optional Evening Sessions
*The 40-hour requirement may be met through the completion of the 36-hour core course plus at least two 2-hour optional sessions which are included in the course fee.
Optional evening sessions allow you to focus your learning on specific topics for which you have responsibilities. Optional sessions include:

  • Medical health physics (part 35)
  • Laser hazard control (ANSI 136.1-2009)
  • Hand-held instruments practicum
  • Liquid scintillation counting practicum
  • X-ray radiation safety
