Applications are invited for VLIR-UOS short training scholarships available for practical training of 1 to 2 weeks at a Flemish university or university college in Flanders or in a VLIR-UOS partner country for which VLIR-UOS elaborated a country strategy. Participants must be a national and resident of one of the 54 countries of the VLIR-UOS-country list in order to be eligible for a VLIR-UOS scholarship. The funding of a Short Training Initiative includes, in addition to the scholarships for participants, a project fee for the organizing university or university college. This fee consists of bench fees per VLIR-UOS sponsored participant (€ 66 per participant per day). The application deadline is 20th October 2014.
Study Subject(s): Scholarships are awarded in a development oriented subject.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for practical training of 1 to 2 weeks at a Flemish university or university college in Flanders or in a VLIR-UOS partner country for which VLIR-UOS elaborated a country strategy.
Scholarship Provider: VLIR-UOS
Scholarship can be taken at: Belgium (Flanders) or VLIR-UOS partner country for which VLIR-UOS elaborated a country strategy (Burundi, Cuba, DR Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia, South Africa, Suriname, Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam).
Eligibility: The promoter(s) and budget holder should meet the following criteria.
-Promoter Professors, researchers and lecturers, who are affiliated with a Flemish university or university college, can apply to this call on the condition that:
-they will remain affiliated with the institution for at least the scheduled duration of the project;
-they are authorised to submit a project proposal (this does not mean they have to be able to enter into financial commitments on behalf of the institution, see budget holder);
-they have the required competences to successfully manage and lead the project;
-they are the (co-)organiser of the STI.
-The target group of a STI is in principle international. Participants must be a national and resident of one of the 54 countries of the VLIR-UOS-country list in order to be eligible for a VLIR-UOS scholarship
Scholarship Open for International Students: Applicants of Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa), Asia (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Laos, Nepal, Palestinian Territories, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam) and Latin America (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana,  Honduras, Haiti, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay) can apply for these training scholarships.
Scholarship Description: VLIR-UOS Call Short Training Initiatives (KOI), 2015 Images-29The Short Training Initiatives (STI, in Dutch: KOI) are short term, intensive, interactive, and applicable trainings, organised at a university or university college in Flanders or in a VLIR-UOS partner country targeting participants from developing countries. They explore a question related to development challenges of one or more developing countries with which VLIR-UOS cooperates or to a specific theme in the country strategy of a partner country for which such strategy has been developed.
Number of award(s): The total available budget for STI allows VLIR-UOS to organise minimum 6 STIs of 14 days with 14 scholarship participants each. These figures are only indicative.
Duration of award(s): It is a lump sum which is paid to the organisers on the basis of a bench fee for every VLIR-UOS scholarship awardee in proportion to the duration of the STI. Each VLIR-UOS scholarship participant entitles the programme organisers to a bench fee of € 66 per day of STI, as stipulated in the VLIR-UOS scholarship guidelines. This means that a STI programme of two weeks with 14 VLIR-UOS scholarship participants gives the right to a bench fee of € 12.936 (14*66*14).
What does it cover? The funding of a Short Training Initiative includes, in addition to the scholarships for participants, a project fee for the organizing university or university college. This fee consists of bench fees per VLIR-UOS sponsored participant (€ 66 per participant per day). This allowance covers the deployment of academic and administrative staff as well as logistical expenses, communication expenses and teaching aids.
Selection Criteria: A proposal will be selected on the basis of following set of 6 selection criteria. This set of selection criteria will apply, in the same way, to all calls that VLIR-UOS will launch. However, the weighting of each of the 6 criteria can differ per type of call, in order to meet the diversity of different intervention types: Scientific Quality, Relevance, Effectiveness, Efficiency, Impact and Sustainability. As overall VLIR-UOS policy guideline, in case of equal overall score of projects, preference will be given to proposals that
-involve more than one Flemish university
-involve both universities and university colleges
-are interdisciplinary
-are situated within humanities
-are submitted by female promoters
-are submitted by young promoters
-are submitted by promoters who have never submitted proposals to VLIR-UOS before
Notification: Applicants will be notified before 24 December 2014 .
How to Apply: A project proposal for a STI must comprise the following components:
1. An application form (obligatory format, annex 1)
2. A brief curriculum vitae of the promoter(s), the budget holder of the STI and experts (at most 2 pages per person, free format)
3. A written statement of the promoters in case of a joint proposal (free format)
4. An evaluation by participants of a former edition of the STI (if applicable, free format)
5. A detailed time schedule of the training programme (free format)
6. A budget proposal for the STI (obligatory format, annex 2)
7. A budget proposal for scholarships, in case of organisation in the South (obligatory format, annex 3).
These documents can only be submitted in English. Proposals must be submitted to the ICOS of the Flemish university association electronically.
Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline is 20th October 2014.
